Wishing wells have been a part of European folklore for centuries. IT was once believed that water housed deities; the Germanic and Celtic peoples considered springs and wells sacred places. Later, water was considered to have healing powers and through subsequent centuries, throwing pennies into a well or fountain while making a wish was considered good luck. The Wishing Well Santa passes by the well and is beckoned to have a cool drink of its healing water, thereby giving him nourishment for his arduous journey. Perhaps the Wishing Well Santa will also remind us of the preciousness of water and, as we throw our pennies into the well, grant our wish that we have the wisdom to do everything in our power to preserve fresh, clean water for our children and future generation.
