Piece is 8" tall and requires 4 AA batteries (not included). It plays a "Christmas Melody", which includes, "Jingle Bells", "O Christmas Tree", "Silent Night", "Deck the Halls", and "The First Noel".   There are no directions, but it does come with the original box.  You definitely want to "add water", so the waterfall runs while the music plays.  Without the water, the motor runs loudly (well, maybe not loud, but it sounds like radio static).  There is an on/off switch on the side.  I noticed that when first turned on, it played right away, but it would stop after the first song and sometimes kick in again a few seconds or a minute later with the next song on the play list.  But other times I had to touch the switch or near it to get it to start up again.  I'm not sure what makes it sensitive like that.
